Maggie Gyllenhaal wasn’t bothered by Hollywoods ageism/sexism when she was cast as the beautiful young female opposite much older males.

The Guardian article reporting how Maggie Gyllenhaal was quite upset that at 37 she was told she was too old to play the love interest of a 55 year old male.

This apparently didn’t bother her when her character had relationships with: James Spader in “Secretary”, 42 when she was 25, her breakthrough hit, Dany Trejo, 62 when she was 29 in “SherryBaby”, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe, or Jeff Bridges 60 when she was 32 in “Crazy Heart”, where she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In “Adaptation”, “Mona Lisa Smile”, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” her character was regularly with male characters 10 – 15 years older than her, sometimes more, such as “Happy Endings” with Tom Arnold (46 to her 28).

Why didn’t she turn down these roles and insist female actors of more ‘appropriate’ age be cast instead?

And apparently nepotism doesn’t bother her either, as her first four films her father directed.
